Annaliese’s 7th Day – Sponge Bath & Play Date

Mommy and Daddy gave Annaliese her first sponge bath. Actually Daddy did most of the bathing while Annaliese sucked on Mommy’s finger. She did great!

Then our soon-to-be Godson Ian came over to bring his new friend Annaliese a gift and have a play date. Of course Ian did all the playing while Annaliese slept!

While Annaliese was having her play date Grammy and Great Aunt Loretta went shopping to find her perfect party dress for the Baby Shower.

Here’s a picture of Annaliese and Great Aunt Loretta after they got back from shopping.

Some of Annaliese’s many gifts. These are her ballerina things.

Annaliese’s 6th Day – More visiting

Today was spent visiting with more friends, family, and neighbors. It’s hard to believe that one little girl can bring so much company. Thanks to everyone that has visited!

Annaliese’s 5th Day – Pizza Night/Not So Good

Today was spent visiting with family and welcoming more guests. Eric’s mom came to help me some in Annaliese’s nursery. I still had shower presents from the last two showers that needed to be put away. We decided to order a pizza and salad for dinner tonight. The pizza sure tasted great but didn’t agree with Annaliese. This was my first experience with eating things that affect breast milk. I sure felt bad when my “Little One” had gas all night.

This is a picture of napping earlier in the day…that sure didn’t happen so peacefully later in the night.

Annaliese’s 4th Day – Going to the Doctor

Annaliese had her first doctor’s appointment today. Eric took her to the scale to have her weighed and she had dropped under 5 pounds. She was still within 94% of her birth weight so I don’t have to supplement with formula…yippee! She is feeding every 2 hours at this time in fact I even had to feed her at the doctor. She looked very healthy and they did not hear the clicking in her hip today. More family came to visit when we got home.

On our way to the doctor!

We receive flowers, fruit baskets, and lots of gifts. The people and the presents just kept coming.

The first night home Annaliese stayed in her onesie from the hospital. The second night she slept in one of Eric’s socks! I know this sounds strange but it was super adorable. She was so tiny that we didn’t have any clothes to fit her. Part of the reason was that we hadn’t bought any preemie clothes and the other part was that she came on my shower day where I would have gotten some more clothes for her. Anyway the sock served the purpose. We had a long sleeve onesie with mittens to cover the top half but her poor little legs didn’t have any covering. We put her in the sock, swaddled her up in a blanket, and she was completely content for the rest of the night!

Annaliese’s 3rd Day – Coming Home Party

It was a rainy, chilly day when we came home. We were able to leave the hospital in the afternoon. The baby had dropped about 4 ounces. She slept on the way home and when we rounded the corner to our street we saw a stork sign in our front yard. Eric’s parents had surprised us and had the sign delivered. They had come over earlier in the day and cleaned up the house some, washed our bed linens, and brought Quila over. When we came in the door I came in first and greeted Quila. Next came Eric with the baby. All Quila did was sniff her and go on but yet she wanted to be right in somebody's lap if they were holding her!

Later in the day Aunt Erlinda came over to bring all of the food that was intended for the shower. We had a “Coming Home” party with all of our family and they helped us eat the food.

Annaliese's 2nd Day – Palm Sunday

The nurses were all so nice in the hospital and one of them that came to check on me in the early morning even knew some of my family from Pungo. She said that she couldn’t wait to announce it in church on Palm Sunday the next day that I had had the baby! The nurses nicknamed Annaliese “Peanut” in the hospital because she was so little and cute. She has such a beautiful complexion with skinny little legs and arms. Her legs are so skinny that she has extra skin that you can pull up around her knee caps. She seems to have big feet like her daddy and defined calf muscles that would explain all the kicking she did in the womb.

Today was spent with family coming in and out again. Aunt Loretta brought Annaliese her first palm from church so I formed it into a cross so that she could have it to keep. Aunt Erlinda and Lauren came over to bring a blanket to the baby that she made for her. Amber had to bring one of our shower presents the car seat/stroller to us early since we needed it in order to leave the hospital. Eric and his dad left for a little while to get the car seat installed at the Fire Department (another thing that had been on my agenda to do on Spring Break). I stayed with family while they were gone. Our photographer came over as well to take a few pictues of the baby. I was so tired toward the end of the day I was practically falling asleep as people were talking to me. Dr. Lehman was the pediatrician on call. He did Annaliese’s first check-up. Everything checked out great except for one little concern with her hip. He called it a “crunchy hip.” He said that it typically happens in first born girls from the way they lay against the spine in the womb. He would continue to check it in the next couple of days and if need be would do an ultrasound to see if it needed any further attention. He didn’t seem too concerned and said that “if” something should need to be done it would simply be a harness she would have to wear around her diaper area to keep the hips in place until they grew properly. The strange thing is that my mother was born with a dislocated hip so of all the things that could be wrong with the baby for her to have a hip concern was ironic.

Mrs. Thames came and while she was there sewed up the “going home” outfit that was Eric’s. With Annaliese’s skinny little legs her Grammy had to make the elastic around the legs tighter to fit her.

"Baby Thames" is a ............ girl!

The nurse finally got Eric and I into a regular room and shortly after that Amber showed up. Aunt Linda and Lynn came next followed by Aunt Loretta and my Dad. I was able to get an epidural right away. Eric asked Amber if she would stay with me through the epidural since she had gotten one before and thought she would be of more help than he. Getting the epidural was not that bad and once I had it I was almost totally relieved of my pain. I rested and dozed a little through the rest of the night. Dr. Waterbury, the doctor on call, came in to check on me and told me that Dr. Morgan would be on call for Saturday. I was super excited since he had been my doctor all along! I continued to progress throughout the night with dilating. I remember some of my nurses asking if I felt my water breaking at various times. Occasionally I felt like there was leakage but it was hard to tell with the epidural. In the morning Dr. Morgan came to see me and said that they were going to give me medicine to help me progress along and would be breaking my water. At about 10:00 a.m. on Saturday morning once I had reached 10 cm and Dr. Morgan had broken my water I began pushing. Exactly as I had wished for it to be, Eric and Amber were in the room. I was so amazed at how much they were able to be a part of the whole process. The nurses let each of the take a leg and coach me along through my pushes. We did lots of practice pushes and Eric and Amber lead the whole thing. At times they would have to tell me I was having a contraction because I didn’t even feel it. They would tell me to start pushing then they would count and give a few reminders. All the nurses that were in there with me were so nice. They were very patient and gave me gentle coaching the entire way. I pushed for about 3 hours. I remember the nurses reading the Birth Plan I had brought and really followed it to a tee. Dr. Morgan sat at the end of the bed and was such a fantastic doctor the entire time. I was swelling pretty badly with each push and I remember at times feeling like my head was going to pop off of my shoulders because I was pushing so hard. I kept my eyes closed for most of the entire process. The only time I would look up was to make eye contact with Eric for comfort. When the head was coming out I remember Eric saying that it looked like a ball of black yarn. I remember it hurting pretty badly when the baby was finally coming out but by the last three pushes I kind of out of it. I do remember finally when Baby Thames made her appearance in the world at 1:27 p.m. I looked down and Dr. Morgan had turned the baby over on her side and laid her on my stomach. Right then Eric looked at me with tears in his eyes and said it was a girl! We were so excited and just couldn’t believe it. The part that hurt just as much as the last pushes was getting sewn up. At that point though I was relieved that I had seen my beautiful baby girl with all her fingers and toes and had heard her cry. They took her over to the warmer to check her all out and I had to finish the stitching up process. Once that was over I was just overwhelmed with joy and tears as the nurse held my baby up to see me. Words cannot describe these moments. I remember Dr. Morgan saying that had she been any bigger I would have had to have a C-section because I was swelling very badly. We were also very surprised it was a girl since everyone thought I was having a boy. I guess somehow Eric and I subconsciously knew we were having a girl because that was the only name we had ready!

Our little Annaliese Naomi Thames weighed in at 5 pounds 3.6 ounces, 18.5 inches long and was just adorable!
Even though she was small everything seemed to be working properly and she didn’t have to go to the nursery at all. She was a preemie by size (being under 6 pounds) but was considered a late preterm baby by being 3 weeks early. She did a fantastic job of latching on and was eating right away.

The waiting room was full of family and friends waiting to see our baby girl. As I held my sweet angel Eric and Amber went out with the video camera to share the news. There were at total of 29 people in the waiting room and boy were they excited. The nurses in the hospital said that it was the largest group of family and friends for one child that they had ever seen. The groups had to come in shifts to see the baby. Many of the people that were supposed to be at the shower came to the hospital instead. The rest of the day was spent visiting with family.

The first night we kept Annaliese with us in the room. I was feeding her every 2 hours anyway so she just stayed with us. She had lots of tests to do at certain times throughout the night so she was in and out of the room. At one point they thought she might be a little jaundice but her levels checked out fine and she was not. One time in the middle of the night I awoke to see Eric just holding Annaliese and staring at her. What a most beautiful sight. I asked him if everything was okay and he said he had been staring at her as she slept for the past two hours. I turned over and nodded peacefully back off to sleep…I was happier than words can express!
