Sign of the Week, “bed.”
On Saturday Eric and I got up and went to breakfast at this really neat bistro called, The Broken Egg Bistro. Eric wanted to take me there because they have really good French Toast, which both of us love. At breakfast I told Eric that we should go to Barnes and Noble to look at Baby Name books. So, that’s what we did. We have lots of names written down that we like and lots that people have given us but we wanted to see what else was out there as well. We spent over an hour in the aisle looking through books and laughing about different names. We did write some down that we liked and think we might have officially decided on a girl name! Boy names are still being considered!
After that we went and bought a new mattress. As I have mentioned before Eric has been having trouble with his back. We decided that it was time for us to buy our first mattress. We laid on tons of them and spent hours at the stores looking for just the right one. I sure hope it’s going to be good. Eric sure is happy! I hope he’s able to get a good night’s rest soon. Since we got a new mattress I though the “Sign of the Week” should be “bed.” I figured that children need to be able to communicate when they are ready for bed so that’s the sign Eric learned this week!
Saturday night we went to dinner at Carrabbas with DJ, Penny, Jessica, and Mike. We had a great dinner and a great time.
On Sunday Eric and I got up and went to the early Mass because, of course, Eric couldn’t sleep with his back. (The mattress isn’t being delivered until Wednesday.) Today I showed Eric the basics of Infant CPR that I had learned on Friday, along with 2 videos on the internet. He had to practice on our baby (that we’ve been taking to our classes) too! The rest of the day was spent doing things around the house, updating the blog, and washing baby items from the shower last weekend. I also ordered an awesome baby sling on-line called a Moby Wrap. I have heard such great things about it and can’t wait to use it. We also e-mailed our Religious Education coordinator and set a date for Baby Thames’ Baptism, June 19th at 4:30! The neat thing about the date is that I was also baptized the third weekend in June, June 21, 1980!
For a pregnancy update…I can’t get over the level of activity that occurs in my tummy these days! The fetal movement is beyond description. I feel complete shifts and can notice when gravity has taken its force on the baby after I’ve laid on my side for a long time! On Sunday I counted throughout the day that Baby Thames had 6 sets of hiccups! Every time I turned around the baby was having the hiccups and at this point I can watch my tummy pulse with every one of them through my shirt. We have also done the “Flashlight Experiment” with the baby and he/she responded. You are supposed to be able to put a flashlight up to your belly and the baby will move according to the direction of the light. It really worked, Eric was fascinated! It’s really a technique that is sometimes used for breech babies that are in the wrong position. The parent can hold the flashlight low and close to the pelvic line to get the baby to turn and go in that direction. I have no idea what position Baby Thames is in right now but doing the experiment was fun. The outcome: at least I think that Baby Thames’ eyes are working because he/she went to the light! Also I have had a little cramping this week, very minor, kind of like period cramping on and off.
On Monday Eric and I went for a tour of the hospital we will be delivering at. I took one, of the two, best routes to the hospital and timed it on my way there. Non-interstate way: Total time: 14 minutes, 4.8 miles (at 5:34 in the evening). On the way back I took: Interstate way: Total time: 14 minutes, 6.1 miles (at 7:20 at night). I guess taking either route will get us there in the same amount of time. Eric and I decided that more than likely we will take the non-interstate route because you never know, at what time of the day, the interstate will be backed up! We learned a lot about the hospital that night and wrote down a bunch of ideas about things to bring. We got to see inside one of the large, nice rooms that I will be delivering in. As we were on our tour a lullaby began to play over the loud speaker. The tour guide/nurse told us that every time a lullaby is played a baby is born there. How sweet! There were two precious ones born during our short 1 hour tour! Also the 18 year old ban was lifted today. Since the outbreak of the H1N1 Swine Flu, hospitals in our area had put a ban on children visiting the hospital. As of today the ban was lifted. Now, all of my little cousins will be able to come up to the hospital to meet Baby Thames when he/she comes!
On Tuesday we had a faculty meeting after school to discuss the current school budget and economic situation related to education. The outlook is not hopeful. I also called today to set up 2 pediatric interviews for next week. We feel like we know what doctor we are going with (the one we had met at our Parenting Newborn class) but wanted to check out another practice just to be sure.
On Wednesday I went to Chase’s musical program at school. He did a great job remembering the words and body movements to all of his songs! We also had our mattress delivered today and boy is it comfy! Mrs. Thames came over later to get a mattress from me and helped me make up the bed. Eric had a mint and message waiting for him on his pillow when he got home! A good sleep was had by all!
On Thursday I had a doctor’s appointment after school. Eric could not go with me this time because he is standing in for his boss this week at work and couldn’t get away from the office. When I got there I was weighed in and had gained 2 more pounds since the last visit. Dr. Morgan measured my belly and then told me that he wanted me to come in for an Ultrasound next week to find out how big the baby is. I was excited about that! I was also given the Group B Strep test. While he was doing the exam he told me that he could feel head and that I was 1 cm dilated! I was a little surprised about that but can’t wait until next week to find out more information. I know that you can stay at 1 cm for a long time so I’m hoping to stay that way until at least 40 weeks!
On Thursday I also received my first issue of Parenting magazine in the mail. I had gotten a really cheap offer for the magazine so I went ahead and signed up for a year. I figured any information can be helpful when you’re a new mom!
I also got a special gift in the mail from my Aunt Pat in Florida. She sent me a book called, “Mothering by Heart.” The book is a collection of poems and stories from a mother that kept a journal throughout her pregnancy, kind of like the blog I keep each week. I’m including today the first poem and scripture from this book, which I found heartwarming especially since I found out today that I’m 1 cm dilated. My “waiting time” is drawing to a close!

My dinner was boring, a cheese enchilada. As you know, it’s Friday during Lent, so there are not many choices for food at a Mexican restaurant. Oh well, the company was good!
