Week 24 (12/19/09 – 12/25/09)

Sign of the Week, “please.”

We spent this weekend putting up our Christmas decorations. We could not believe that time had slipped by and we had not even put all of our decorations out yet. I am usually the person that has things up by the weekend after Thanksgiving but this year we definitely had been preoccupied with “thoughts of baby.” We had fun on Saturday and Sunday putting up our trees and other decorations. Eric and I are good at tag teaming with the trees. I fluff the branches and he puts them on with the lights. He has a certain way he likes to put the lights on so that each branch has just enough. I am responsible for finding the perfect places for all of the ornaments and because he’s so tall he puts on the bows, Angel, and star that go on top of each one. On Saturday night we had a “dusting of snow” so I captured just one shot of it on the cars. It didn’t last long and was pretty well gone by the next day. By the end of the weekend the house was ready for Christmas. This weekend I also did my first load of baby laundry. As I had posted in an earlier blog, I had recently gotten some of Chase’s old, gender-neutral, baby clothes. I enjoyed washing these “little things” for the first time!

Monday was the first day that I officially wore an entire maternity outfit, black pants and a red top. It was comfortable except the pants kept falling down at school all day. Today was the day of our “Winter Party” at school. Since I had already told the students on Friday about being pregnant I figured I had better tell the parents today when I saw them. I was fortunate enough to have the lady that will be substituting for me come in to be introduced to the parents. All of the parents seemed very receptive and later a few of my parent volunteers came up to me and said that they had a feeling I was. We had a fun party.

Tuesday was my last day before the winter break. It was a regular school day and the kids were too excited to get much of any work done. Later that night I did some last minute shopping.

Wednesday I had a doctor’s appointment at 9:30. My plan was that I would go in for a “quick” appointment but that didn’t end up happening. Throughout the entire pregnancy Eric has been able to go to all of the doctor’s appointments. For this appointment I told him not to worry about coming because it was just supposed to be a normal check up and I would be in and out. Plus as most of you know Eric is a supervisor at UPS so trying to convince his boss that he needed a few hours off 2 days before Christmas was nearly impossible. When I got into the office I was able to tell Dr. Morgan that he knew my Uncle Brad and Aunt Caroline. On Thanksgiving when I was talking to my Aunt and Uncle we had figured out that they knew my doctor. Ends up my cousins, Bradford and Clarke, played baseball with Dr. Morgan’s son and they have all known each other for a long time. He thought it was neat we had made that connection. Dr. Morgan began the appointment by listening for the heartbeat. As he started to listen he told me that the heartbeat sounded, “weird.” I thought he meant that the machine he was using makes the heartbeat sound weird so I just agreed with him and said “yeah it does sound strange.” Little did I know his interpretation of the word “weird” meant that he was worried. He told me immediately that he wanted me to have an ultrasound right then. I instantly started to worry. I couldn’t believe that on the one day that Eric couldn’t come this was going to happen. So, I went back to the waiting area to have my “surprise” ultrasound. I knew that the ultrasound technician was very busy that day because when I was in the waiting room earlier many pregnant ladies were in there waiting on their ultrasounds. I felt bad being squeezed in between their appointments but I guess Dr. Morgan thought it was important. As I waited I sent Eric a text to tell him what was going on and asked him to say a quick prayer to himself for our baby. As the technician began to give me the ultrasound she started to reassure me that everything looked fine. I was amazed at how the baby’s features looked so much more distinguished this month than the last month when we had our ultrasound. I was excited to see the baby again and told the tech that this was my “Christmas present,” to not only be able to see the baby again, but to get a few more photos, and more importantly get a good check-up. She monitored the baby’s heart rate for a while, watched him/her move around, took lots of measurements, and checked the fluid. Everything she said seemed good and the best part was that the umbilical cord was NOT wrapped around the baby’s neck. (That is one thing Dr. Morgan was worried about.) After the ultrasound I went back to Dr. Morgan’s office for a chat before going home. He said that I had gained a total of 12 pounds and that was good. We talked for a few more minutes about how he had known my uncle for such a long time and asked about how my two cousins were doing in school. He told me also that he wanted to see me back in 3 weeks instead of 4 and that he hoped I had a nice Christmas. As I exited his office he gave me a quick hug/pat on the back and said he was glad to have made that connection between our families. After the appointment I called Eric to let him know how things had gone. He was glad to hear my reassuring voice on the phone that everything was okay! Needless to say my “quick” appointment turned into 2 hours.

After the appointment my family had planned to come over to help me wrap Lumpia. You see I am going to have a birthday party in January and I thought it would be good to go ahead and have the Lumpia wrapped before I went back to school so that I wouldn’t have to worry about it later. So, Aunt Linda, Maison, Amber, Jordon, and Chase came over to help make Lumpia. When we have parties in my family we always have Lumpia and when we wrap it we recruit everyone in the family to help us since it’s such a lengthy process. We had a good time making all 200 Lumpia for the party. Once they all left I still had hours worth of baking to do for Eric’s co-workers. Every year I make goodies for Eric to take to his co-workers. I usually make different things each year but I always do chocolate covered pretzels because they love them. Late into the night as I was making Chex-Mix I dropped an entire batch on the floor. I was going to take a picture of my mess to post for the blog but I was too angry at myself for doing it and didn’t want to “capture the moment.” You know they say that pregnant women can get a little clumsy and that sure was me this night! I managed to stay up and get everything done for Eric to take to work on Thursday but I was still mad at myself the next day for the waste of food that went all over the floor.
